Pipe Bursting

Pipe Replacement with Trenchless Pipe Bursting

Trenchless Pipe Bursting is a revolutionary new technology to cost-effectively replace old sewer, wastewater and stormwater pipes without the expense or disruption caused by open drain methods. It is also a much more durable and effective alternative to pipe relining.

Pipe bursting works by pulling a bursting head and new pipe through the old lateral, bursting the old pipe as it goes and forcing the fragments into the surrounding soil. The new pipe is strong enough to be used under a road, is extremely durable with a lifespan of up to 100 years, and can even be larger than the old pipe. These are big advantages over pipe relining, which cannot be used in a road, and reduces the size of the drain. Pipe bursting also breaks up or pushes out any tree roots inside the old drain, which otherwise can cause a liner to break if using the relining method.

New PE100 or UPVC pipes can be pulled through the old pipe with digging only required at either end, without any traffic disruption and vastly reducing the landscaping costs. The new pipes can be joined together and PE100 pipe can be welded at 6 meters lengths.

Setup and preparation is quick and efficient, and once the job is done the repair work is much less than trenching the existing drains.

Only minimal excavations (launch and exit pits) on each end of the lateral line are needed to facilitate use of the Grundotugger Static bursting system.

Once the launch and exit pits are prepared, the Grundotugger unit is placed in the exit pit and connected to a hydraulic power pack.

At the launch pit, the winch cable is rodded through the existing line to the exit pit. The bursting head is attached to the new pipe and connected to the winch line.

The Grundotugger unit pulls winch line, the bursting head and new pipe through the existing lateral. This bursts the old lateral, forcing the fragments into the surrounding soil while pulling in the new pipe.

Advantages of Lateral Pipe Bursting

  • Burst and replace service pipes up to 45 meters in length
  • Can negotiate turns and bends up to 45°
  • Can be used for almost all types of damage and old pipe materials
  • We can pull through 100mm pipes & 150mm pipes. PE100 Black sewer & stormwater pipes.
  • Long service life of new pipes from 80–100 years. Much more durable than pipe relining.
  • Short assembly and setup times
  • Renewal of existing routes
  • Big saving in cost compared with open trench methods
  • Very little impact on traffic and environment
  • No subsequent costs due to ground settlement, groundwater interference and road damage after pipe bursting
  • Safe application according to latest rules and standards
Broken pipes can cause serious damage. We offer 24/7 emergency service and we will be there whether it’s 5 a.m. or 5 p.m.
